The pick of the bunch (Er mejo fico der bigonzo)

The Rome of the carefree nobility, an easygoing and irreverent but cultured and elegant band, is where aristocrats surround themselves with the wildest artists and the most vulgar buffoons to enjoy rowdy evenings in via Margutta, the throbbing heart of authentic Roman life.

This small street, where antique shops alternate with galleries and auction houses, harbours the hidden world of de Noantri, a festival of art and fine wine where you can savour the famous porchetta or spit-roasted pork while discovering cultural associations and admire figs alongside international literary clubs.

In this setting, at the famous Feast of the Fig Tree in via Margutta, there is the annual presentation of the prize referred to as the pick of the bunch of Margutta figs. The award is presented to a personality – from the world of art, entertainment, politics, and sport or from society – who is celebrated as symbolizing Roman-ness; what it is to be truly Roman.

The award ceremony invariably takes place beneath the foliage of the fig tree in via Margutta, at the entrance to number 100/103, near Galleria Vittoria and its name comes from the old custom whereby fruiterers’ placed the best figs at the front of their basket to be seen by all.

Inventor and indefatigable master of ceremonies at the event is the renowned collector and promoter of art, Enrico Todi, who once again this year is organising the gala that opens the October Festival in via Margutta at which the list of prize winners includes, among others, the film director Luigi Magni, the surgeon Domenico Mascagni, Prince Manfred Windish-Graetz, the actors Gigi Proietti and Enrico Montesano, the pop singer Little Tony and the Senator for life, Giulio Andreotti.

Giorgio Cazzaniga, from the jeweller company that bears his name, in his capacity as member of the Commission for the Eleventh Festival, participates in the conferment of the prestigious award to the famous paparazzi reporter from La Dolce Vita, Rino Barillari.
